They say location is everything, and if that’s the case, this stately 2,531 sq. ft. ranch home on County Road B, just north of Stoughton, has it all. It’s a quick 5 minutes to downtown Stoughton, 2 minutes from Lake Kegonsa, and situated right between Hwys 51 (to the west) and N (to the east), it’s around 20 minutes to Madison — and just a half-hour from Janesville.
Set on a large beautifully manicured 1-acre lot, surrounded by mature trees and plantings, there’s plenty of privacy — especially in the beautifully landscaped backyard oasis. But we’ll get to that later.
First, the house itself — a classic traditional, ready for your personal decorating touch. The cream wood accented with red brick, work together to create a classic, yet homey feel. Step inside through the new fiberglass front door and you’ll find an open entry set off by soft green slate tile and crown molding. There’s a front closet conveniently located on your left and to the right, you’ll find an oversized 2-step-down living room/great room. The huge picture windows let in lots of natural light and there’s a woodburning fireplace with a marble surround and hearth. Off-white paneled woodwork gives the home a clean and classic look.
The other side of this room steps up to a formal dining area set off by beautiful wood floors and built-in cabinets for all your entertaining storage. A large window on the front wall provides natural light. Across the room, you’ll find a set of French doors that open to (or shut off) the kitchen.
The open kitchen features a large counter — with room for one perfectly-placed seat to sit and pore over your recipes or grocery list! There’s a wall oven and Jenn-air cooktop with downdraft exhaust. The GE refrigerator features ice and water in the door. The oven is also GE and dishwasher is a Whirlpool.
Right off the kitchen, you’ll find a spacious 3-season porch with screens and storm windows. Shady and cool, this is the perfect place to sit with your coffee — or evening wine — and enjoy the view of your beautiful backyard. There’s board and batten siding, indoor/outdoor carpeting, a ceiling fan, and room for all your comfiest furniture.
Back inside the kitchen, just past the counter, you’ll find a large pantry and an informal dining area which opens directly to the family room. Here again, the room features large windows — this time facing the backyard. This room has a slightly warmer, more rustic feel, with wood paneling, dark woodwork, ceiling beams and cob molding. A brick wood-burning fireplace with a beautiful wood mantle comes with an unexpected — and convenient — opening for your log storage.
On the far side of the room, you’ll find a handy storage closet next to a louvered door leading to a wide hallway – where you can circle back to the front entry or continue on to the bedrooms. Chair rails lend interest to the walls both here and throughout the house.
There’s an extra-deep linen closet just outside the hall bathroom. This main bath features small-square floor tile and an oversized vanity with seating, drawers and a medicine cabinet. There’s additional built-in floor-to-ceiling storage to the left — and, of course, we can’t forget the soaking tub.
The main bedroom or owner’s suite is at the end of the hallway. This large room offers an oversized closet and large windows, with plenty of space left over for a king bed and dresser. The main bath features a jetted tub and shower, updated floor tile, and unique dresser-style sink with a natural stone vanity top.
There are 2 more bedrooms, perfect for kids or guests. Both have ceiling fans, large windows and double closets (one with double hanging rods, the other with organizer).
Off the family room, you’ll find a wide-open staircase leading to the lower level family room with walk-out. Three-panel sliding glass doors lead to the beautiful backyard. A tiled landing just inside the door, provides space to wipe your feet before continuing further into the room.
On this level, there’s a half-bath with a window and built-in cabinets. There’s also an oversized storage closet to hold games, extra throws, pillows and more! A laundry area includes a stackable washer and dryer, with room for a storage cabinet or counter — or space enough for your own full-size washer and dryer if you prefer. Just off the laundry room, you’ll find a large enclosed shower.
This level also holds a giant “double” bedroom — perfect for 2 kids, a teenager looking for a little privacy, or even as an in-law or guest suite. The large room is separated by a wall that extends across about 2/3 of the room, providing privacy for both sides. With its large walk-in hanging closet, it would also work as an office and occasional guest room. The possibilities are endless!
To the left of the lower level family room is another area with LVP flooring, large storage closet, and built-in shelves, offering many possibilities depending on your personal needs (or vision)! This would make a great work-out room, kids playroom, craft room, space for a pool table or game table — or any combination of options.
The unfinished part of this level provides plenty of space for mechanicals and storage. There’s also space for a large worktable and tools.
Finally heading back to where we started, with the outside of this home, you’ll find lots of things to note and enjoy. There’s a convenient wide turnaround drive with extra space for parking. And the large front porch would be a great place for a couple chairs— where you can relax, overlooking the spacious front yard with its mature trees, perfectly placed for both shade and privacy.
Continuing around the house, you’ll find the large landscaped backyard. This is truly a gem. There’s a large patio with a trellis for shade just off the main floor family room. And whether looking from inside or out, the view here is spectacular. There’s a large garden area with many perennials and several raised garden beds. You’ll find a shed for storage, and a firepit perfect for assembling family, friends, and S’mores! Like the front yard, the back has plenty of mature shade trees for privacy. There’s a graded flower garden with rock ledges. And the kids or grandchildren are sure to love the little bridge right in the midst of it all.
If you don’t already live in Stoughton, just know that it’s a growing community that offers the best of both words – with its proximity to Madison and a strong sense of community pride. There’s a good school district and the downtown is a thriving place with a post office, Opera House, library and senior center, along with many local shops and restaurants. Golf at Stoughton Country Club, or Coachman’s Inn. And Lake Kegonsa, with several boat launches, as well as Lake Kegonsa State Park, offers many opportunities for land and water recreation.
But of course, we can’t forget to mention the yearly event that has put Stoughton on the map. Each year on the weekend closest to the 17th of May, the city celebrates its Norwegian heritage with a 4-day Syttende Mai Festival, complete with king and queen, Norwegian dancers, parades, rides, athletics, and lots and lots of food booths set up to raise money for local schools, clubs and charities.
